Atsuko Fujii
Atsuko Fujii is a Japanese artist now based in England. She studied at the Kawahara Design School in Osaka before moving to England to further her studies at the Gemini School of Illustration in Berkshire. Since completing her formal education in 1998, her work has been exhibited widely across the UK and Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada and the United States.
Fujii uses egg tempera or acrylic on birch wood to depict exquisite, meditative contemplations of objects suspended in space. They are often spatially dislocated- a chilli pepper floating above a table, beautifully painted eggs seeming levitating above a table. As such, these paintings capture a moment caught in time, within a gravity-defying space- a sense of stillness is reached through denying movement. Whereas the objects in the foreground are rendered three-dimensional, the backgrounds are painted in flat, sometimes mottled, expanses of colour, with often a differentiation of tone to subtly indicate where a table, or a horizon line, might be situated. Of her isolated candles and simple vessels, levitating fruit, vegetables and eggs, the artist asserts that ‘my painting is not the presentation of ideas or style but simply expressions of an almost subconscious emotional reaction to them.’
Fujii has had her work included in the RA Summer Show, the CHASE Exhibition at the Royal College of Art and the RWA Autumn Exhibition. She has won both the ING Purchase Prize and the Humphreys Prize at the Discerning Eye Exhibition.
