Summer in Bath. The streets are busy with passers-by puzzling at the changeable weather. The skirl of the seagulls drops in and out, distorted by the wind. In the gallery we have beautifully scented roses thanks to my colleague Ali Spence who brings in these bulbous flopping, flaking French blossoms that smell like another world. Meanwhile, ‘neath a mackerel sky in Crocker-land…

The body carves itself
with its own hand,
leaves crude incisions
around the mouth, the eyes.
The body strains
hip and thigh, elbow, kneecap.
Hammers against
dead weight pulling down.
Now a pitted shoulder
bursts
from the stone. A live vein
runs through it, branched
lightning-
But the stone wants only
to lie down
in its plot of shadow. Wants
not to be touched.
