Summer in Bath. The streets are busy with passers-by puzzling at the changeable weather. The skirl of the seagulls drops in and out, distorted by the wind. In the gallery we have beautifully scented roses thanks to my colleague Ali Spence who brings in these bulbous flopping, flaking French blossoms that smell like another world. Meanwhile, ‘neath a mackerel sky in Crocker-land…
A Red Red Rose’ by Robert Burns
O my Luve’s like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June;
O my Luve’s like the melodie
That’s sweetly play’d in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry:
Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun:
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.
And fare thee well, my only Luve
And fare thee well, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.
Some poems are worth reading for the last line alone (and they inspire songs !!)
Andrew is one of the talented painters in our ‘Classical Roots’ exhibition, which continues until 22 June, and runs alongside our exhibition of Anna Gillespie’s sculptures
Chana Bloch ‘The Captive (after Michelangelo)’
The body carves itself
with its own hand,
leaves crude incisions
around the mouth, the eyes.
The body strains
hip and thigh, elbow, kneecap.
Hammers against
dead weight pulling down.
Now a pitted shoulder
bursts
from the stone. A live vein
runs through it, branched
lightning-
But the stone wants only
to lie down
in its plot of shadow. Wants
not to be touched.
Katharina Klug’s ceramics are also on display until 22 June.
And finally…
‘The Best Thing in the World’ by Elizabeth Barret Browning
‘What’s the best thing in the world?
June-rose, by May-dew impearled;
Sweet south-wind, that means no rain;
Truth, not cruel to a friend;
Pleasure, not in haste to end;
Beauty, not self-decked and curled
Till its pride is over-plain;
Love, when, so, you’re loved again.
What’s the best thing in the world?
–Something out of it, I think.’
